CURRICULUM

Pierluigi Claps is full professor of Water Engineering at the Politecnico di Torino since October 2000. He got a M.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering with honors in 1986 and a Ph.D. degree in Hydrology in 1990 at the Università di Napoli. He was active as assistant professor and associate professor at the Università della Basilicata (Potenza). He is author and co-author of more than 100 papers, mainly related to statistics and watershed hydrology topics, published on refereed journals (47) and on proceedings of national and international conferences. From 1990 to 2005 P. Claps was involved in the activities of the CNR-GNDCI (Italian group for prevention of hydro-geologic disasters) working at topics related to flood risk estimation at a regional scale. Within GNDCI, from 2001 he was in charge of the research unit 1.54 at the Politecnico di Torino and from 1999 he was member of the Scientific Committee, in which he provided support to the coordination of the Research line #1.

He is referee for international journals in the field of Hydrology and actively participates to the activities of the Hydrology division of the EGU, as session convener in several Annual EGU Meetings. In 1999, he was Programme Committee Chair of the first of EGS-EGU Topical Conferences on Natural Hazards (‘Mediterranean Storms’) of which he co-edited the Proceedings book of the Conference. He was member of the Scientific Committee of the 3rd, 9th, 10th 11th12th e 13th EGS-EGU Plinius Conference on Mediterranean Storms, of two STAHY-IAHS Workshops (2010-2012), of the 2nd and 3rd edition of the EGU Leonardo Conference. He was Programme Committee Chair of the 4th EGU Leonardo Conference “Hydrology and Society, held in Torino in November 2012.  He has been Managing Guest Editor of the 2011 HESS special issue dedicated to “Catchment classification and Prediction in Ungauged Basins”. In 2008 he was a member of the Scientific Committee of the XXXI Conference of Hydraulics and Hydraulic Works of Perugia, and  co-chair of the XXXIV Conference of Hydraulic Engineering of Bari (2014) and of the XXXV Conference of Hydraulic Engineering of Bologna (2016).

From 2005 to 2105 he has been Chair of the Scientific Committee of the HydroAid association, a no-profit organization offering courses, training  and capacity building to developing country in the water sector. Since 2009 he is in the managing board of the Italian Consortium of Universities for Hydrology (CINID). From 2012 to 2016 he has been President of the Italian Group of Water Engineering (GII).

Among the most relevant research projects led by Prof. Claps at the Politecnico di Torino are: Participation to the Steering Committee of Water Resources Master Plan of the Regione Piemonte, Assessment of flood risk reduction by systems of reservoirs in the area of the Maggiore lake (Interreg III EU funds), Water resources assessment and management under water scarcity scenarios (Italian Ministry for University and Research –MIUR– 2003), Water resources assessment and multipurpose management with regard to the realization of new reservoirs in Piemonte (Regione Piemonte 2003), Improving snow storage assessment by means of new experimental stations and techniques (Regione Piemonte, 2007),  CUBIST: Characterisation of Ungauged Basins by Integrated uSe of hydrological Techniques, (MIUR, 2005-2009), Design floods estimation in Piedmont, with particular reference to catchments closed by dams, (ENEL spa, 2008), Assessment of agricultural water demands in the Baraggia district, Funded by Consorzio Ovest- Sesia Baraggia, (2008); Regional-scale analysis of water use from hydropower production plants (Regione Piemonte, 2010). Ongoing projects are:  FLORA: Flood estimation in complex Orographic area for Risk mitigation in Alpine space, (EU -Interreg IV), RISKNAT: Natural Risk management in mountain landscapes, Funded by (EU -Interreg IV), RENERFOR, Assessment of small hydropower production potential in North-western Italy, (EU Interreg-Alcotra), Evaluation of the hydrologic and hydraulic safety of large dams (General Directorate for dams , water and electricity infrastructures) .
